Burundi Migoti Hill Lot 1
We're very excited to be sourcing coffee from Burundi again this year through our partners Omwani and their Rwandan partners Migoti Coffee. We absolutely love the ethics and passion that’s at the heart of Migoti Coffee. The company was set up in 2016, at a time when Burundi's coffee industry was struggling to regain stability after a 12-year civil war and a subsequent political crisis. Engineers Dan Brose and Pontien Ntunzwenimana had a a vision to revitalise the local coffee economy and provide a sustainable income for the farmers in Pontien’s home region. Migoti now operates two washing stations, including the primary Migoti station, where this lot was processed, and a secondary facility at Kinama. These stations process coffee cherries brought in by over 1,200 smallholder farmers from the surrounding highlands. Migoti prioritises sustainable coffee growing practices, educating farmers on techniques to enhance crop quality and yield. They also promote reforestation with shade trees, soil stabilisation, and mulching to enhance soil health and mitigate the effects of erratic rainfall and climate variability. In 2024, Migoti Coffee began constructing a water reservoir and pipe network near the Kinama washing station to address local water access issues. When the cherries arrive at Migoti washing station, they are sorted by hand to remove defects and under/over ripe cherries, before being pulped. The coffee is then placed into fermentation tanks, fafter which it is rinsed and transferred to pre-drying. Next, the coffee goes onto raised drying beds for 20 - 25 days. The dry parchment/cherry is transported to the mill, where it is graded by size and density. The farmers whose coffee is included in this lot include: Salvator Rurimunzu, Charles Simbare, Antoine Bamboneyeho, Bernard Banyankinyakamwe, Leoncie Narikure, Desire Ntezukobagira, Samuel Itangishaka.

Roasters Notes Burundi Migoti Hill Lot 1
Just in time for summer, we're serving up a fruit punch of a coffee. With nectarine juiciness and orange zest acidity, balanced against soft brown sugar sweetness, this one's a contender for my coffee of the year. An absolute stunner.
About Burundi
Burundi’s lush, mountainous geography and favourable soils and climate are well suited to coffee agriculture.

A number of varieties, including Bourbon, Jackson and Mibrizi are harvested between April and July. Farming is carried out entirely by smallholders, centred around 160 washing stations.

With Burundi being so small, there is little to distinguish coffees grown in each of the different coffee growing areas, but coffee from Burundi is typically juicy and bursting with flavours of fruit and berries.
