Burundi Kinama Hill Lot 24
This is an incredible natural coffee from Burundi, sourced through out partners Omwani and their Rwandan partners Migoti Coffee. We absolutely love the ethics and passion of Migoti Coffee. It was set up in 2016, at a time when Burundi's coffee industry was struggling to regain stability after a 12-year civil war and a subsequent political crisis. Engineers Dan Brose and Pontien Ntunzwenimana had a a vision to revitalise the local coffee economy and provide a sustainable income for the farmers in Pontien’s home region. Migoti operates two washing stations, including the primary Migoti station and a secondary facility at Kinama, where this lot was process. These stations process coffee cherries brought in by over 1,200 smallholder farmers from the surrounding highlands. Migoti prioritises sustainable coffee growing practices, educating farmers on techniques to enhance crop quality and yield. They also promote reforestation with shade trees, soil stabilisation, and mulching to enhance soil health and mitigate the effects of erratic rainfall and climate variability. In 2024, Migoti Coffee began constructing a water reservoir and pipe network near the Kinama washing station to address local water access issues. The ripe and red cherries are collected after 6 hours of harvest. After this they are put on raised drying beds for 30-35 days, being turned over regularly and sorted through to further remove defects. The dry cherries are taken off at 10-11% of moisture content. Dry parchment/cherry is then transported to the mill and is milled to get graded by size and density. After milling the green beans are sorted to remove some remaining defects, assessed and packed ready for shipping. Farmers who grew coffee in this lot include: Stany Nyandwi, Limedy Mvuyekure, Speciose Ntahondabasigiye, Gaspard Nahimana, Clespin Ntahondi, Salvator Butoyi, Joseph Bampfuyeko

Roasters Notes Burundi Kinama Hill Lot 24
Well this is fun! The tasting notes of this natural coffee just scream of summer. The first thing that hits me is an intense bubblegum flavour, softening to deep rosehip, really nicely balanced against red apple acidity. I reckon a pour-over would really do this one justice.
About Burundi
Burundi’s lush, mountainous geography and favourable soils and climate are well suited to coffee agriculture.

A number of varieties, including Bourbon, Jackson and Mibrizi are harvested between April and July. Farming is carried out entirely by smallholders, centred around 160 washing stations.

With Burundi being so small, there is little to distinguish coffees grown in each of the different coffee growing areas, but coffee from Burundi is typically juicy and bursting with flavours of fruit and berries.
