Established in 1964, and fully revitalised at the turn of this century, Madan Estate is nestled in the Waugh Valley, where you will find collections of hidden coffee gardens, grasslands, and plantation blocks dotted between rivers which twist between towering mountain ranges.  Since the Estate was purchased by Highlands Arabicas Ltd in 2003, environmental sustainability has become a top priority. Native shade trees were planted to promote biodiversity throughout the farm, and chemicals were prohibited and more natural methods utilised to fight pests and help with soil fertility. Additionally, waste management prevents any harmful wastes from coffee processing to pollute the surrounding ecosystems. This has allowed the thriving of species such as tree kangaroos to maintain healthy lifestyles amongst the coffee trees.  Not only does the estate care for the environment and the quality of the coffee, but they also prioritise the wellbeing of its staff. Housing is provided for seasonal and full-time staff members, with the Madan Health Clinic available to assist employees and their families with their health needs. Funds are allocated towards community development and establishing water, power, and sanitation projects at eight local schools and three community centres. There is also a school and community centre, providing resources such as books to the people.  Madan Estate works with the surrounding tribes growing coffee, assisting them with the processing of their coffee. With their support, tribal farmers are beginning to learn how to become more efficient producers, growing higher quality coffee and earning more thanks to increased market access. During the harvest, after the cherries are carefully handpicked, they are delivered to the mill to be sorted. The cherries are then de-pulped and soaked in a tank of water overnight to initiate fermentation, breaking down the remaining mucilage. In the morning, the coffee is dispersed to dry in the open sun for about a week, before seasoning until they are shipped.

Smallholder farmers

Region:

Songwe

Kent, Bourbon, N39

Altitude:

1,600 to 1,671 metres above sea level

Town:

Mbozi District

Located in the Mbozi district, in the southern Songwe region of biodiverse, agriculturally rich Tanzania, the members of the Iyenga Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society have been hard at work. Averaging one or two hectares of farm each, the 292 registered members of the cooperative hand pick their cherries at peak ripeness. The cherries are then either taken to the local wet mill for assessment and processing, or are meticulously processed at the farmers' homes, where hand pulpers are used to peel away the external fruit, before the beans are soaked for 3 days to remove the sticky mucilage. The AA and AB in the name of this coffee refers to the size of the bean, with this particular batch using the largest beans of the crop. The result is a tropical ray of sunshine. Don't be fooled by the light body and subtle flavours, as this coffee has a lot going on. We're picking up notes of zingy raspberry leaf, sweet, sharp baked pineapple and orange zest, with a lightly creamy mouthfeel and a lingering, fruity finish.
Roaster's Notes Argyll's Secret Roast
Anyone else getting peach yoghurt with this one? This version of Secret Roast has all the sweetness you've come to expect, but with a lovely creaminess to balance it out. I love it as a pour over, but try it as a flat white for something a little different.
About Tanzania
Bounced back from catastrophic coffee wilt disease in the 1990s, Tanzania now produces up to 40,000 metric tonnes of coffee each year, of which about 95% is grown by smallholder farmers. Whilst 30% of this crop is still made up of Robusta, about 70% of Tanzania’s output is now Arabica, with most crops being Kent, Bourbon, and Typical varieties.

The main regions for Arabica farming are Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Ruvuma, Mbeya and Kigoma, and are known for producing coffee with bright acidity and fruity juiciness.
About Indonesia
Since the first seedlings were imported by the Dutch in the late 17th century, Indonesia's coffee industry has flourished, and the Max Havelaar report on the abuses within the colonial system have become a byword for ethical standard and certification.

Typically associated with semi-washed, giling basah coffees, Indonesian speciality coffee producers are beginning to experiment more with washed and honey processed lots.

Typically harvested from May to October, expect a full bodied cup with hints of spice.
